Other Countries
Austria has reintroduced temporary border controls with Slovakia until mid-December 2025. Waiting times at Kittsee–Jarovce crossing can reach 45 minutes during peak hours.
Slovakia and the Schengen Area
Slovakia is a member of the Schengen Area and the European Union. Many nationalities can enter without a visa for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This rule applies to the entire Schengen Area.
Required Entry Documents
- Valid passport (issued less than 10 years ago)
- Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure
- ID card (for EU citizens)
- Visa if required by nationality
- Proof of purpose of travel and accommodation
- Travel insurance
- Proof of sufficient funds for your stay
EES System (from 12 October 2025)
- Biometric data registration (fingerprints and photo)
- Children under 11 will have their photo taken but not fingerprints
- Expect longer border queues
Border with Ukraine (External EU Border)
The border with Ukraine is an external EU border. All crossings must occur at official border crossing points.
Road Crossings

Rail Crossings

- Matovske Vojkovce / Pavlovo — 24/7, freight trains only
Crossing Tips
- Ukrainian citizens only need a biometric passport (no visa required)
- Children must have birth certificates and parental consent
- When driving: Green Card insurance required
- Expect longer queues in July–August and on weekends
Border with Austria (Temporary Controls)
Austria is conducting temporary controls at the Slovak border at least until mid-December 2025.

Practical Tips
- Austrian border: Arrive early morning (before 08:00) or late evening (after 20:00)
- Ukrainian border: Allow 1–2 hours for border formalities
- 90-day limit: Strictly observe. Overstaying results in fines
- Documents: Always carry passport, insurance and hotel booking
