Hungary and the Schengen Area
Hungary is a member of the Schengen Area and the EU. Citizens of 60+ countries can enter visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This rule applies to the entire Schengen Area.
Required Documents
- Biometric passport (mandatory for Ukrainian citizens)
- Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond departure date
- Proof of accommodation and travel insurance
- Proof of sufficient funds for your stay
EES System (from 8 November 2025)
- Biometric data registration (fingerprints and photo)
- Children under 12 — photo only, no fingerprints
- Passport stamps replaced with digital records
- System automatically tracks 90-day limit
Border with Ukraine (External EU Border)
The border with Ukraine is an external EU border. EES system active from 8 November 2025.

Crossing Tips

Border with Austria (Temporary Controls)
Austria extended temporary border controls at the Hungarian border until 15 December 2025.
What to Expect
- Selective checks at fixed checkpoints
- Mobile patrols on roads up to 30 km inside Austrian territory
- Delays: up to 45 minutes at peak times

- Ukraine border: Expect EES registration (5–10 minutes on first entry)
