Full Schengen Member from 1 January 2025
Romania became a full Schengen member. Borders with Hungary and Bulgaria are open without controls.

Romania and the Schengen Area

As of 1 January 2025, Romania is a full member of the Schengen Area. Citizens of 60+ countries can enter visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This rule applies to the entire Schengen Area.

Required Documents

  • Biometric passport (mandatory for Ukrainian citizens)
  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond departure date
  • Proof of accommodation and travel insurance (min. 30,000 EUR)
  • Proof of sufficient funds for your stay

EES System (from 12 October 2025)

  • Gradual rollout until 10 April 2026
  • Biometric data registration (fingerprints and photo)
  • Children under 11 — photo only, no fingerprints
  • Passport stamps replaced with digital records

Border with Ukraine (External Schengen Border)

The border with Ukraine is an external Schengen border. EES system being gradually implemented from 12 October 2025.
