Easter 2026 Border Queue Ukraine–Poland: When to Cross Without Waiting

Easter 2026 is one of the busiest periods at the Ukraine–Poland border. Orthodox Easter falls on April 12, while Catholic Easter is on April 5, 2026. This means border traffic will be elevated throughout the entire period from April 7 to 17, as Ukrainians return home for the holidays and then travel back to Poland and other EU countries.

Based on previous years' data, during the Easter period at Shehyni–Medyka, Krakivets–Korczowa, and Rava-Ruska–Hrebenne checkpoints, car queues reach 3–5 hours on peak days (April 10–12). The longest waits occur on Holy Saturday, when thousands travel home for the Easter dinner.

The best time to cross the border for Easter 2026 is April 15–17, when most people are already celebrating at home. We also recommend traveling at night from 23:00 to 06:00 or early morning (06:00–09:00) — queues are minimal during these hours, even on peak days.

On this page you'll find: an interactive queue forecast calendar for every day of April, real-time data from 16 checkpoints, comparison of all Ukraine–Poland border crossings, required documents checklist, and step-by-step EES guide.

When to Cross Ukraine-Poland Border Without Queues at Easter: Three Scenarios

Scenario 1: Leaving Ukraine (April 7–12)

Before Easter (April 7–9) traffic builds up as people head home. Peak is April 10–12 (Holy Saturday and Easter). Best days to leave: April 7 early morning or April 8–9 at night.

Avoid: April 10, 11 (Holy Saturday). Wait times reach 180–300 minutes.
Tip: Travel at night (23:00–06:00) — wait time drops from 3–5 hours to 15–30 minutes.

Scenario 2: Return After Holidays (April 13–17)

Easter Monday (April 13) has heavy return traffic. Traffic remains at high levels. Best return days are April 15–17 when most have already left. Queues drop to 60–120 minutes.

Best return days: April 15–17. Queues around 60–90 minutes.
Tip: Delay your return by 2–3 days after Easter Sunday. Alternative — travel on Easter night (23:00–06:00), when queues are minimal.

Scenario 3: Using Alternative Checkpoints

If main checkpoints (Shehyni, Krakovets, Rava-Ruska) are overloaded, consider alternative crossings:

Nyzhankovychi
(Lviv → Dukla, Poland)
Usually less busy
Smilnytsia
(Ivano-Frankivsk → Krynica, Poland)
Rarely used

These checkpoints have longer routes but can reduce total travel time when main crossings have critical queues.

What Causes Long Queues at the Border During Easter

Queues form at the Ukraine-EU border during April 7–17, 2026 due to several factors:

1

Overlap of Orthodox and Catholic Easter

In 2026, Orthodox Easter (April 12) and Catholic Easter (April 5) are just one week apart, creating TWO waves of traffic — first Catholic Easter travelers (April 3–6), then Orthodox (April 9–12). The overlap extends the high-traffic period to nearly 2 weeks.

2

Mass Return of Ukrainians Working Abroad

Easter is one of the most important holidays for Ukrainians. Tens of thousands of workers from Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Germany return home for celebrations. On peak days, up to 50,000 people cross the border, creating enormous pressure on checkpoints.

3

Students on Spring Break

Spring break and Easter holidays coincide for thousands of Ukrainian students at European universities. They return to Ukraine for 1–2 weeks, further increasing border traffic in April.

4

New EU EES Standard

From October 2025, EU borders implement the EES biometric registration system (Entry/Exit System), adding 1–2 minutes per person to processing time. This indirectly affects the entire checkpoint chain.

5

Limited Checkpoint Capacity

Even with enhanced staffing, 16 checkpoints on the Ukraine-Poland border simply cannot process 155,000+ people per day without queues. This is the physical infrastructure limit.
